Heat Pump Servicing Ireland
Heat pump servicing covers annual inspection, refrigerant checks, filter and coil cleaning, and performance diagnostics on a system that’s already installed. HeatPumpIreland.ie provides free servicing quotes from F-Gas certified engineers in Ireland.
What a Heat Pump Service Includes
A heat pump service checks the components that affect efficiency and safety, distinct from installation, which fits the system in the first place.
Refrigerant check
Pressure and charge levels, handled only by an F-Gas certified engineer under EU refrigerant regulation.
Filter and coil cleaning
Removes debris that reduces heat exchange efficiency at the outdoor unit.
Electrical and control check
Inspects wiring connections, controller settings, and fault history logged on the unit.
Performance diagnostics
Compares current output against expected efficiency to catch drift before it becomes a fault.
Why Annual Servicing Matters
Manufacturers commonly require documented annual servicing to keep a heat pump’s warranty in force. Skipping it doesn’t stop the system running, but it does let efficiency drift downward, and it can void warranty cover if a claim later depends on service records.
Refrigerant handling on any heat pump is regulated under the EU F-Gas Regulation. An engineer without F-Gas certification cannot legally open the refrigerant circuit, which is why installer certification and servicing certification are checked separately.
Heat Pump Servicing Process
Booking
An F-Gas certified engineer covering the property’s county receives the enquiry and confirms availability.
Inspection
The engineer checks refrigerant levels, filters, coils, and electrical connections on site.
Diagnostics
Performance is measured against the unit’s expected output to flag any efficiency loss.
Report and next steps
The homeowner receives a written service record. Any fault gets flagged with a repair quote, not carried out without agreement.
Servicing Engineer Credentials
F-Gas Category 1
Required to handle, top up, or recover refrigerant in a heat pump’s sealed circuit.
Manufacturer training
Brand-specific diagnostics and controller access differ across Daikin, Mitsubishi, Grant, Nibe, Samsung, and Vaillant systems.

When to Book a Heat Pump Service
An annual service is the standard cadence most manufacturers recommend. Booking sooner makes sense if the system runs noticeably less efficiently, short-cycles, or a fault light appears on the controller.
This page covers servicing an installed heat pump. If a heat pump hasn’t been fitted yet, see Heat Pump Installation for the survey, grant, and fitting process instead.

Heat Pump Servicing Questions
How often does a heat pump need servicing?
Most manufacturers recommend annual servicing, and many require it in writing to keep the warranty valid.
Is a grant available for servicing?
No. SEAI’s heat pump grant funds installation, not ongoing servicing or maintenance visits. See the SEAI Heat Pump Grant page for installation funding.
Can any heating engineer service a heat pump?
Refrigerant work specifically requires F-Gas Category 1 certification. An engineer without it can carry out non-refrigerant checks but cannot legally handle the sealed circuit.
What if the service finds a fault?
The engineer reports it with a repair quote. Nothing gets carried out beyond the standard service without the homeowner’s agreement first.
