Heat Pump Installation Ireland
Heat pump installation fits an air-to-water, ground-source, or air-to-air unit, connects it to a home’s heating and hot water system, and commissions it against SEAI standards. HeatPumpIreland.ie provides free installation quotes from SEAI-registered installers who carry out the survey, grant application, and installation in Ireland.
Replacing an Oil or Gas Boiler
Most homeowners install a heat pump when replacing an ageing oil or gas boiler, since SEAI grant funding since January 2025 no longer covers fossil-fuel boiler installation for retrofit. A heat pump moves heat rather than burning fuel, which cuts running cost against oil at current prices and removes on-site combustion emissions.
Decommissioning an existing gas boiler falls under RGII (Registered Gas Installers of Ireland). An SEAI-registered installer coordinates this as part of the installation, not as a separate job.

Heat Pump Types Installed in Ireland
SEAI-registered installers fit four main heat pump types. Air-to-water is the most common choice for Irish homes with existing radiators or underfloor heating.
Air-to-water
Extracts heat from outdoor air, feeds a wet central heating system and hot water cylinder. Qualifies for the full €12,500 grant.
Full details →Ground-source
Draws heat from buried pipework, horizontal loop or borehole. Higher install cost, qualifies for the full €12,500 grant.
Full details →Air-to-air
Blows warm air directly into rooms through wall units, no radiators. Capped at €7,500 grant, doesn’t heat water.
Full details →Water-source
Uses a well, pond, or other water body as the heat source. Site-dependent, less common in Irish residential installs.
Full details →SEAI-registered installers commonly fit systems from these brands. Grant is the only heat pump manufactured in Ireland, built in Birr, Co. Offaly.

SEAI Heat Pump Grant for Installation
The SEAI grant bundle increased from €6,500 to up to €12,500 on 3 February 2026, for air-to-water and ground-source systems in houses.
Apartments cap at €9,500. Air-to-air systems cap at €7,500 (€3,500 unit plus the €4,000 bonus, no heating-upgrade component). The full €4,000 bonus requires replacing an existing fossil-fuel or electric-storage heating system. A separate €200 technical assessment grant is also available.
Heat Pump Installation Process
Survey and BER assessment
An SEAI-registered installer assesses the Heat Loss Indicator, existing heating system, and radiator or underfloor requirements.
Grant application
The installer submits the SEAI application using the pre-works BER and the property’s MPRN. Works cannot start before SEAI issues a Letter of Offer.
Installation
The unit is fitted outdoors, connected to the heating and hot water system, and any old oil or gas boiler is decommissioned.
Commissioning and testing
The installer tests the system, sets controls, and confirms code-compliant operation before handover.
Post-install BER
A new BER assessment records the improved rating, required to close out the grant claim.
Installer Credentials
SEAI registration
Required to issue a grant-eligible quote and to trigger the Letter of Offer process.
RGII
Covers decommissioning of an existing gas boiler where the installation is a replacement.
NSAI S.R. 54
Code of practice for domestic retrofit that governs installation quality and sequencing.
What Affects Installation Cost and Eligibility
Net cost after the grant depends on home size, whether radiators need upsizing for a heat pump’s lower flow temperature, and pipework condition. A dedicated breakdown of price drivers sits on the Cost page.

Heat Pump Installation Questions
Can I still install an oil or gas boiler with a grant?
No. Since 1 January 2025, SEAI funds heat pump installations only under this scheme, not fossil-fuel boiler replacements.
Do I need insulation before a heat pump?
If the home’s Heat Loss Indicator is above 2.3 and the attic and walls aren’t rated Good or Very Good, insulation work needs to happen first. It’s what brings the HLI down to an eligible level.
How long does the SEAI application take?
Timelines vary by SEAI’s current processing volume. Works cannot start until a Letter of Offer is issued and accepted, so this sits on the critical path before installation begins.
Who installs the heat pump?
An SEAI-registered installer contacts you directly to arrange a survey and confirm the quote, then carries out the grant application and installation.
